The IAM 2008 Conference

The IAM's 2008 Conference has been expanded to a 2-day event featuring Robert Benjamin, who presents negotiation, mediation and conflict management seminars both nationally and internationally. The Conference will be held at the Benedict Inn Retreat & Conference Center, 1402 Southern Avenue, Beech Grove, IN 46107. Registration will be limited to the first 75 paid registrations. To enroll, download and complete the conference registration form and send it to the address indicated on the form. For attendees' convenience, the Benedict Inn website provides turn-by-turn driving directions to the facility (or you can use MapQuest or Google Maps.) Topics have been chosen to include something for mediators at all levels of experience and include:
- Styles and approaches to mediation and the role of the mediator
- Managing conflict: theory, techniques and skills
- Negotiation rituals and strategies
- Strategies for avoiding and managing impasse
- Creative problem solving
- Ethical and professional issues in negotiation
- The politics of professional mediation practice
- Marketing mediation - how to get clients; how to advertise; specialization; new opportunities
- Economics of a mediation practice - setting and collecting fees; retainers; written agreements
- The future of the field
Whether you're just beginning or have been practicing for years, there's something for everyone at this Conference, so don't miss your chance to hear this dynamic internationally recognized speaker right here in Indianapolis! The Conference will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. The detailed conference schedule provides an outline of the topics and the conference agenda. The ICCLE has approved the Conference for: 13.0 hours CME / 8.0 hours NLS / 3.8 hours CLE / 2.5 hours Ethics. The NASW has approved the Conference for 13.0 hours of Approved Social Worker CEU. For one-day registrations, Friday - 6.5 hours CME / 4.3 hours NLS / 2.3 hours CLE / 1.0 hours Ethics. Saturday - 6.5 hours CME / 3.7 hours NLS / 1.5 hours CLE / 1.5 hours Ethics. The NASW has approved the Conference for 6.5 hours of Approved Social Worker CEU for either Friday or Saturday.

Annual Members Meeting:
The Annual Meeting of the IAM Membership will be held at 6:30 p.m. on October 28, 2008 in the Indianapolis office of NASW - IN, which is located at 1100 W. 42nd St., Suite 226, Indianapolis, IN 46208. All members are invited to attend. Dinner will be catered in, so plan on joining us for the Annual Meeting of the Members. Elections for the 2008 - 2009 year will be held at the meeting.

The Dispute Resolution Section of the ABA has published a compendium of recent updates on pending and enacted federal and state legislation, including several arbitration bills currently pending in Congress. Learn more.
The American Bar Association has established a Committee to answer questions from mediators, parties to a mediation and their lawyers regarding Mediation Ethics questions. Persons submitting questions do not need to be members of the ABA. Answers will be based on state ethics authorities and the American Bar Association Model Standards of Conduct for Mediators (2005). Other Items of Interest
The Domestic Relations Committee of the Judicial Conference of Indiana is reviewing Indiana's Child Support Rules & Guidelines and will propose changes to the Indiana Supreme Court. Comments concerning revisions to these Guidelines are being requested by July 3 and a public hearing will be held on July 18 to receive comments. See the ISBA website for more information.
The ABA Task Force on improving Mediation Quality has come out with a pamphlet to help mediators improve their practice.
The Dispute Resolution Section of the ABA has recently published some articles containing practice tips.
